Do you homeschool Physics students?

Teaching Physics to your child

As parents, you know how important it is for your child to understand the fundamental concepts of physics. Physics helps explain the world around us, yet it can feel challenging to know where to start or how to make these concepts relatable to daily life. Your child’s curiosity about why the world behaves as it does may often leave you searching for the right answers. This natural curiosity is a wonderful foundation for learning, but explaining these complex ideas can feel overwhelming without the right resources.

Resources to help you teach Physics at home

Perhaps you've tried watching YouTube videos together to grasp concepts like Newton's Second Law or conducted hands-on experiments, like observing changes in states of matter with ice cubes and water. These activities are great ways to engage with physics, but you may feel uncertain if they fully cover everything your child needs to know for GCSE Physics. You want to ensure that your child doesn’t miss out on important topics and receives a comprehensive understanding, but it can be hard to cover every detail and build their knowledge step by step.

Physics Class Tuition

This is where I can help. I offer online and in person (SE21) classes and one-to-one sessions designed to support your child in breaking down complex physics concepts and making sense of the world. Together, we can work through structured workbooks that I’ve created and revised during 14 years of teaching and running class sessions since. We will also create our own problems together guided by your child’s interests. Physics practicals can be performed using common household items, and I can provide a list of accessible materials to deepen your child’s hands-on learning experience. With this approach, physics becomes engaging and approachable, building your child’s confidence and understanding as they prepare for their exams.

Difference Between Homeschool and Tuition

Teaching Physics means that the first time the student covers GCSE or A Level concepts may be with me, as opposed to covering these topics in class with a teacher. Together we will put together a scheme of work to ensure that the course can be covered in your time frame and the student has enough time for study and also independent practise. Depending on your situation, the international GCSE or A Level may suit better as there is no requirement to have completed the core practicals. Equally some students are still affiliated to a school or wish to continue with the exam board they have started, this is equally fine, and may require a "Core Practical" week to cover gain the practical endorsement required for the exam. These weeks are run by independent providers who generally hire a school for a week in the holidays so students have access to laboratories. Do contact me to discuss how I can support your homeschooled child, or just to talk through what homeschooling in Physics can look like.

Do you tutor Physics Students with ADHD – Use of diagrams and formulas as hooks

I have taught and tutored many students in Physics with ADHD which requires - as it would with any student - explicit clarity, structure, and engagement. I use a structured way to support their learning using hooks. structuring responses around diagrams and formulas, providing step-by-step frameworks which give students a clear path to follow. Instead of presenting large blocks of abstract information, I break content into manageable visual and logical pieces. For example:

Hook Question: “Why does a feather fall slower than a hammer on Earth, but not on the Moon?”

Diagram: Draw free body diagrams of objects falling with and without air resistance.

Formula: Use the questions and diagram to find relevant formulas, often F=ma in the Forces topic.

Guided Response: Add a number by each part of the diagram and each variable of the formula, creating a step by step structure explicitly linking variable from beginning to end. No waffle, just logic!

This approach keeps attention anchored, reduces cognitive load, and provides multiple entry points (verbal, visual, and logical) for understanding. For ADHD learners, these cues act as scaffolding—helping to explicitly connect ideas starting with information given and ending with clearly and logically solving a problem!
